A provisional trial date has been set for a 34-year-old man accused of murdering a teenager who died in a motorbike crash.

Matthew Buckworth, of Charlton’s Garth, Guisborough, Cleveland, did not enter pleas during the hearing at Teesside Crown Court.

He is accused of murdering Sonny Stephenson, 17, in an incident in Bolckow Street, Guisborough, in August.

Buckworth appeared via a videolink from Durham Prison and was told a provisional trial date had been set for May 21.

He will be back before the court to enter a plea on December 18.

Police have made two arrests following yesterdays derby game between Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of historical missile throwing in connection with a reported offence committed in October 2017.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment and causing alarm/ distress with words.

Both men currently remain in custody.

Lifeboat crews responded after reports of ‘a person in the water’ at Redcar.

Crews from Redcar, Staithes and Skinningrove RNLI were called to Redcar, near the Regent Cinema, at 4.37pm on Friday.

But what first appeared to be a person in difficulty turned out to be a surfer spending his Friday afternoon riding some North Sea waves.

When the Redcar lifeboat arrived, the surfer came out of the water and told crews he had been in the water for 40 minutes.

A fellow surfer had been with him earlier but had left the water.

The incident was found to be a false alarm in good intent.
