An unexpected power cut has affected more than 2,000 homes in our area.

Properties in TS7, TS8 and TS9 - located in Coulby Newham, Stainton, Nunthorpe, Marton and Stokesley - were left without electricity yesterday afternoon.

Northern Powergrid said that the power cut has been caused by an unexpected problem with the cables or equipment that serve the areas.

It was reported at around 3.45pm and electricty was restored by early evening.

The Redcar Coastguard Rescue team have been called into action in our area.

On Thursday the team responded to reports of an injured hang glider pilot on Marske beach near to St Germains Church.

The casualty was located and was brought to a waiting ambulance.

If you see anyone in trouble on the beach or cliffs you should dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Our area has been chosen as the location of a pioneering energy project aiming to reduce carbon emissions by demonstrating that the existing domestic gas network can fully carry hydrogen for use by homes and businesses.

The trial, which is due to commence in November in South Bank, subject to planning, is expected to attract attention from around the world and if successful lead to the creation of new jobs in our area.

A piece of disused land, between Ann Street and Harcourt Road, is being leased by Northern Gas Networks (NGN) for the trial from Redcar and Cleveland Council after approval was received from cabinet members.

The site was chosen because gas pipes on it, while all still intact, are disconnected from the rest of the network.
