Redcar & Cleveland Mind’s exciting new ‘Something in Mind’ shop is now open to the public.

Bold and innovative, this new venture aims to create a unique retail experience, which the team behind the venture hope will have customers coming back time and time again.

Something in Mind is a Low Carbon shop, where the team use more donated items than any other shop in the Tees Valley. The mantra is 'Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose'. At its heart is the café which provides homemade, quality and affordable food.

Veronica Harnett, CEO, said "The income from this new venture will allow Redcar and Cleveland Mind’s support services to be sustainable and grow.

"People who live in Redcar & Cleveland now have a truly local charity shop, where their money is going back into their own community.  All our profits are reinvested into our wellbeing services such as counselling, courses and activities that are helpful in building confidence, self-esteem and better mental health.

"At the heart of what we do are our volunteers and placements - we want to improve people’s health, help them gain confidence and improve social skills.  We increase their employability by providing on the job experience and training, leading to recognised qualifications in food hygiene, retailing, catering & hospitality and customer care.  Furthermore, our PREP project (Prisoner Rehabilitation and Engagement Programme) continues to go from strength-to-strength."

The team hope to encourage people to shop locally to buy unique and unusual hand crafted gifts, saving fuel on out of town shopping visits.

Items that would normally end up in landfill are reused, for example a pair of old curtains can be transformed into four plush cushions, or an unloved table given a shabby chic makeover.

Ron Storey, one of the volunteers at the shop, said "I have earned the respect of staff and customers alike and I now feel positive about my future.  I’m working hard and want to give something back to the community."

If you would like to support the shop, they urgently need donations of clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac, books and DVD’s.

'Something In Mind' is open 9.30 am – 4 pm Monday to Saturday.
