A thirty minute documentary film looking back at Redcar's experience of World War One is now available with new subtitling on YouTube - thanks to the efforts of a local history enthusiast.

Produced by Friends of Redcar Cemetery and acclaimed film-maker Craig Hornby, 'Redcar Remembers The First World War' was launched on YouTube last month, to mark the centenary of Britain entering the war.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund WW1 Programme, the documentary features unseen archive footage of Redcar Airfield licenced from the Imperial War Museum.

After viewing the film, local history enthusiast Nick Murray got in touch with Craig to find out whether subtitles were going to be added.  Craig advised him that unfortunately it was too time consuming for him to complete the work himself.

Nick explained, "My father is 93 and as a RAF veteran of WWII, was very much looking forward to watching the film. However, he suffers from hearing loss and so subtitling was essential for him to enjoy the film. I contacted Craig and after some discussion I asked if I could add subtitles myself to his film. Craig agreed and I spent most of one weekend adding them with the help of software. When Craig saw the results he invited me to his studio, so that we could complete the work on the film together. We wanted to tidy up the subtitling, check for misspelling and improve the timings of the captions."

The subtitles are now complete and reach broadcast standards. They are available for anyone to access on YouTube. Nick concluded, "Many older people will particularly appreciate the addition of subtitling to Craig's excellent film and with 10 million people suffering hearing loss in the UK, it is an important group to include".
