Armed police were called to a fast food restaurant in Redcar yesterday after reports that a customer was carrying a weapon.

Armed response officers were called to McDonalds on Thrush Road, following several reports that a male inside of the restaurant had a handgun in his pocket.

Whilst the gun looked real to the customers who contacted police with good intention, following closer inspection by the officers who attended it was established that this was a wooden replica gun and no threats had been made.

The 15-year-old boy was taken home by officers and provided with strong words of advice in front of his parents.

Officers have thanked the public-spirited customers who contacted them, ensuring swift action was taken so it could be confirmed that everyone was safe.

A woman who smashed the window of a vulnerable family member’s home with a brick before stealing his wallet and mobile phone has been jailed.

25-year-old Nicole Hamilton forced her way into the property in Brotton on the evening of Saturday 27th January this year.

The victim’s phone was taken along with his wallet which contained money and bank cards.

Hamilton, of Gladstone Street, Brotton, was subsequently arrested and charged with burglary and theft with violence.

She appeared at Teesside Crown Court last Thursday and pleaded guilty to the offence, and was jailed for more than two years.

Planning permission has been granted to build a new swimming pool and learner pool in Eston.

The new facility, which is designed to Sport England specifications, will provide a 25 metre, six lane pool with changing areas, a 150-seat spectator gallery, an official’s room for gala use and a Changing Places facility which can be accessed via a new lobby.

The facility will also include a separate learner pool, welcoming children and young people to learn how to swim.

The swimming pool will be accessible for all and will facilitate public swimming and swimming lessons, as well as galas and competition swimming.

Demolition works have already concluded with construction works set to start in the autumn aiming for an opening in early 2026.
