An investigation has been launched after a car and a train collided at a level crossing in our area.

Emergency teams were called to West Dyke Road near Redcar station just before 9.30am yesterday.

Network Rail said there were "no injuries" in the incident, and that it would be supporting the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

Northern said nine passengers were on board the train, which was travelling from Saltburn to Nunthorpe.

Trains running between Middlesbrough and Saltburn were affected for much of the day yesterday, while the car was removed.

The road reopened at about a quarter to three yesterday afternoon.

Local elections are taking place in our area today, with polling stations open until late this evening.

Voting is taking place today in the election for The Police and Crime Commissioner for the Cleveland Police Area, and the Tees Valley Combined Authority Mayoral election.

Polling stations opened at 7am this morning, and will remain open until 10pm tonight.

Voters are being reminded that you will need to take photo ID with you to the polling station, for example a passport or driving licence.

The results of today's elections are expected to be announced in the coming days.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council are asking residents to give their views on volunteering in the borough.

The Council launched a volunteering survey yesterday, aimed at finding out about residents’ experiences of volunteering and how they can be supported to volunteer in the future.

People who don’t currently volunteer are also being encouraged to complete the survey which is available in hard copy at your local library, online or by attending a drop-in session.

The results of the survey will shape and develop a volunteering strategy and help the authority better understand why people volunteer, what they do, challenges and barriers to volunteering, areas they need support, how often they volunteer and what influences their volunteering.

The Council also want to hear from groups and organisations who work with volunteers to find out how they are being supported and how this could be improved in the future.
