Labour’s Shadow Minister for Welfare Reform Helen Goodman joined Anna Turley, Labour’s candidate for Redcar in Grangetown yesterday to talk to families hit by the bedroom tax.

Anna met families in a house meeting to hear directly about the impact of the government’s changes.

Anna Turley said: “The Bedroom Tax is being paid by over 1300 people in Redcar. The government knew when they introduced the Tax that there weren’t enough smaller properties for people to move into but they inflicted this unnecessary hardship anyway. When Labour proposed to abolish the Bedroom Tax last December, current Lib Dem MP Ian Swales didn’t even attend the vote.

Labour has pledged to abolish the Bedroom Tax and I will do everything possible to make it happen.”

Helen Goodman MP said: “The government has imposed the Bedroom Tax on families who are already hard pressed to make ends meet. On average it costs families £700. The government’s own studies show that people are having to cut back on household essentials as a result. Only a Labour government will abolish the Bedroom Tax.”

“Redcar is a key marginal seat – voters here can make a difference not just for themselves but for the half a million families across Britain paying this cruel Tax.”
