Redcar MP Encourages Locals To Become A Dementia Friend
Anna Turley, MP for Redcar has taken a key step towards helping end the stigma surrounding dementia by becoming a Dementia Friend and encourages locals to do the same.
Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative that aims to give people an improved awareness of the condition. The Dementia Friend sessions improve public knowledge of dementia, by providing insight to what living with the condition might be like, and the small things everyone can do to make a difference to people living in our community.
Anna and her team joined Alzheimer’s Society for the session at her constituency office on Milbank Terrace to learn more about helping people with dementia to live well.
Anna said:
“There are 1,186 people living with dementia in the Redcar constituency and this number is set to increase. Most of us know someone affected by dementia and it is becoming ever more important that we are geared up to best support people with dementia as a community.
“Dementia Friends is about giving people an understanding of dementia and the small things we can all do to make a difference. From helping someone find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia, it can help make our local community a better place to live.
“I've signed up to show my support for Dementia Friends, and am encouraging people in Redcar to do the same too.”
Everyone who attended took part in a number of exercises aimed at helping participants understand the impact of dementia on people’s everyday lives.
Claire Batey from the Alzheimer’s Society added:
“Dementia Friends is the perfect opportunity for everyone to improve their knowledge and understanding of dementia, whatever their existing knowledge of experience. Most people who become Dementia Friends are surprised at how much they can learn from the session and how easy it is to take part. We commend Anna for taking this crucial step towards supporting people in her constituency with dementia and we hope that others will follow her lead to become Dementia Friends.”
