Cleveland Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal crash on the A174 between Boulby Mine and Staithes last night (Saturday 12th September) in which a 28 year old man died.

Andrew Hawkins, known to some as Angus, was the driver of a silver Toyota Avensis and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which took place at around 10.50pm.

The Ambulance service attended the crash, along with Cleveland Fire Brigade who sent appliances from Skelton and Loftus, working at the scene for nearly 2 hours. The road was closed until the early hours of this morning to allow for investigation work.

Andrew leaves behind his partner, Leanne Norrie, and two children, two-year-old Paddy James and five-month-old Thomas Andrew. He was also a devoted brother to Stephen and John.

Leanne said: “He was a brilliant dad who would always do anything for anyone, with a very good sense of humour and he was always playing pranks on his nephews. He was a family man, who enjoyed keeping fit at the gym and working as a labourer on a building site.”

Andrew’s mother, Doreen Hawkins, said:  “Andrew was a character in his own right. He was always smiling with a cheeky grin and was a good person who will be missed by all of his friends and family.”

Close family friend, Tricia Earl, said: “I have known him since he was born. He was a very loyal friend and a pleasure to know.”

Officers would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision, seen a silver Toyota Avensis being driven prior to the incident or the immediate aftermath to contact Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting event number 160368.
