Workers at Redcar Steelworks have received letters giving advice on how to make claims for redundancy payments.

The Redundancy Payments Service have written to all SSI staff with details of how to make an online claim for redundancy pay.

Despite the official receiver continuing talks with potential buyers for the site, the future of the plant remains uncertain. A decision will need to be made by tomorrow as to whether to keep the coke ovens burning past the weekend. If the ovens are allowed to cool, there are fears they will collapse rendering them unusable in the future.

However it's a decision which will only be made if talks with potential purchasers are moving positively ahead. 650 staff currently remain employed to maintain the ovens in a safe and working order. Durham-based coal mining company Hargreaves, which itself is reportedly owed around 14-million pounds by SSI UK, has said that it would support any viable plan that can prevent the coke ovens from being destroyed.

However Hargreaves has said it is not interested in buying the whole plant.
