105FM :: Local Radio for Redcar & Cleveland

There has been an angry reaction following the news that 240 workers at the former SSI plant in Redcar were sent home in the middle of shifts yesterday after being told that they had been ‘mistakenly’ been kept on.

The Official Receivers had announced that 650 workers would be retained to maintain the running of the site. In fact 890 workers had actually been told to stay on, so 240 were told mid-shift today to leave the site and that they would be made redundant.

Reacting to the news, Redcar MP Anna Turley said the actions "beggared belief" and that it was "beyond cruel" that 240 people who thought they had a life line to keep their jobs and keep the plant alive had been told that this was a mistake and they aren't needed after all.

East Cleveland MP Tom Blenkinsop was also scathing in his comments, saying the actions were disgusting, and that the Insolvency Service and the Department for Business need to be held to account. He said he would be working with Community Union to ensure that the workers affected would get the justice they deserve.
