A leading glove manufacturer has answered the call to help a response officer who needed specially adapted disposable gloves to carry out his duties.

A north-east representative for British based Polyco saw the social media posts asking for advice and assistance for the officer, who could no longer use five-fingered disposable gloves due to having a finger and part of his hand amputated following an on-duty injury,

A scoping exercise by the Force found that commissioning and manufacturing adapted gloves would cost many tens of thousands of pounds because the gloves would need to be made in such large quantities.

However, kind-hearted bosses at Polyco have stepped in to help, halting a full production line, designing and creating a new ‘mould’ and manufacturing enough gloves to last the officer for the rest of his career – all as a gesture of goodwill.

The officer, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I would like to thank Polyco staff for all their efforts, a great deal of work has gone into this and the new gloves are fantastic - just what I need to enable me to fully perform my duties. It’s taken a long time to get to this point, but I’m pleased we have come to a positive conclusion.”

Polyco’s Deputy Managing Director, Sarah Bridge, said: “We’re delighted to be in a position to support Cleveland Police and in particular this officer by going that extra mile to make his job easier. Everyone involved in the project at Polyco has enjoyed the challenge and we will continue to supply these unique and bespoke gloves for as long as they’re required”

Deputy Chief Constable Iain Spittal said: “It was really important that we tried every possible avenue to find suitable gloves for the officer, who was dedicated to continuing to protect the public across Cleveland on the frontline.

“Appealing for help through the wider media was the natural next step after other avenues had proved fruitless. I’m really pleased Polyco came forward to help, it’s extremely generous and shows the caring side of big business.”
